2/155 Polroad Manor
II
House, later used as a water mill and now used partly as a timber store for a saw
mill. Circa C17 origins, probably partly rebuilt in the mid C19. Stone rubble and
cob. Rag and asbestos slate roofs with gable end to front and rear and hipped ends
to right and left. Brick axial stack in front range and projecting stone rubble end
stack to rear.
Plan: The ground rises to rear and the single storey rear wing is built into the
slope. Almost overall cruciform plan with wide entrance in front of long wing which
functioned as a form of 2-storey porch with 2 rooms on first floor heated by an axial
stack. Single storey rear service wing of one room plan heated by an end stack. The
large rectangular room of the main range comprised the mill powered by an overshot
water wheel which was positioned on the right hand end wall; the water carried along
the leat to the rear of the house and on a launder to the wheel. The wheel was
replaced by a water turbine in the 1920's. It is possible that there may also have
been another wheel on teh left hand end of the building. A very steep stone newel
stair in the angle between the front porch and the front wall on the left hand side
of the main range, provided access to the first floor.
Exterior: Front elevation largely obscured by later corrugated sheet metal sheds.
Wide chamfered granite segmental arch with run-out stops on ground floor of porch and
3-light mullion window on first floor. Lean-to C20 shed on right hand end wall.
Interior: Chamfered heavy ceiling beams to ground floor of porch with inner
chamfered granite segmental arch with run out stops. Mill machinery removed and
floor renewed. Slate-and stone rubble newel stair to first floor.
Roof structure not accessible.
Polroad was a Domesday Manor.
