Details
SNAITH AND COWICK HIGH STREET SE 6422 (south side) Snaith 12/65 No 5 14.2.67 GV II House. Early C18 with later C18 and C19 alterations and additions. Grey- brown brick in Flemish bond; pantile roof. 2-room central entrance-hall plan with through-passage to left, single-room wing to rear right, later outshut for stairs and extension to wing. 2 storeys, 6 bays. Entrance to fourth bay has 2 stone steps to doorcase with panelled pilasters and scrolled consoles carrying dentilled pediment; 6-panelled door and plain overlight in architrave. C19 four-pane ground-floor sashes in slightly- recessed wooden architraves with flat arches with projecting sills and painted rubbed-brick flat arches with projecting ashlar keystones. Passage entrance to left has 6-panelled door and plain overlight beneath similar arch. First floor: original 12-pane sashes with thick glazing bars, and blind recessed window to first bay, in similar surrounds. Stone-coped parapet, swept roof. Interior. Chamfered oak ceiling beams with ogee stops, exposed joists. Mid C18 two-flight return staircase with ramped corniced handrail and column-on-vase balusters with squre knops; pair of half-domed alcoves flanking fireplace to ground floor right with keyed architraves and Gothick flazing over panelled doors; moulded plaster cornice to stairhall. Good pegged oak collared rafter roof with clasped purlins, 7 bays to front range, continued over rear wing. Brick cellars with tunnel- vaulted entrance passage.
