Details
PAYHEMBURY ST 00 SE 3/108 Charwood - GV II
Cottage. Mid C19. Plastered local stone rubble and brick; brick chimneyshafts; slate roof. Plan: L-plan cottage. The main block faces south-west. It has a 2-room plan with central entrance hall and staircase. These rooms have end stacks. A 1-room plan service, block projects at right angles to rear from the right end. Now the left front room belongs to adjoining Rose Cottage (q.v), the rest of which is listed separately. 2 storeys. Exterior: symmetrical 2-window front of original 12-pane sashes arranged around a central doorway which contains a C19 part-glazed panelled door behind a contemporary flat roof porch on both plain posts with trellis sides. To left the roof is continuous over Rose Cottage (q.v) and to right it is gable-ended. Interior: only the left front room (belonging to Rose Cottage (q.v)) was available for inspection at the time of this survey. It has a narrow crossbeam with slight chamfers. The rest of the house is thought to contain more original carpentry, joinery and other detail. Charwood forms part of an attractive group of listed buildings in the vicinity of the village green and the Church of St Mary (q.v).
