Details

SHEEPWASH SS 40 NE 7/87 Upcott Avenal - - II House. Circa 1820 - 30 possibly with C18 origins. Rendered stone walls. Gable- ended slate roof. 3 brick stacks to main range - 1 at each gable-end and 1 axial; 1 lateral stack at rear of outshut and 1 at its side. Plan: entrance at left-hand end into passage leading through house to opposite end which has 3 principal rooms to its front - the central 1 with a large bay window - and a smaller room, kitchen and scullery to the rear. Also opening off the rear of the passage is the staircase. The rooms to the rear of the passage are contained in a 2 storey integral outshut. Exterior: 2 storeys with cellar. Symmetrical 3-window front with large central ground floor canted window bay. All early C19 12-pane sashes (apart from the 1st floor left-hand one which is a fascimile) except for a tripartite sash at the centre on 1st floor. Modillion cornice to window bay and below eaves. The right-hand end wall has original decoratively glazed door at centre with semi-circular fanlight and above it a 12-pane sash window. Left-hand end wall has arched head windows towards the rear and a later C19 porch at the centre with original double 6-panelled doors behind. Rear elevation has C18 2-panel door with fanlight above. Good quality interior: 2 of the doorways in the passage have broken pediments likely to have been added later in the C19. 6-panel doors. The 2 end rooms at the front have later C18 style classical chimneypieces with moulded cornice and raised central panel to frieze. Simple moulded cornices apart from Neoclassical plaster frieze in central front room. Right-hand room has unusual built-in bookcase along 1 wall with cupboard below which has reeded frieze and roundels in corners. The rear left-hand room has a very similar built-in dresser - both date to early C19. This is a very complete house of its period being little altered both internally and externally and forming an extremely attractive group with its original outbuildings, rear courtyard and walled gardens.
