SS 43 NE HEANTON PUNCHARDON WRAFTON,

7/196 Poyers Hotel and attached barn - (formerly listed as Poyer's Farmhouse) 1.11.74

- II

Farmhouse, now hotel, C15 refenestrated early C19. Whitewashed cob and rubble with wheat-reed thatched roof, overlaid with rush matting to front. Stacks at gable ends and lateral stack to rear. 3-room and through-passage plan, formerly open hall with lower thatched extensions at left gable end with brick quoining and to rear at right-angles to upper end of main range. Long barn of cob with hipped thatched roof extends at right angles to rear of lower end, now converted to chalets. 2-storey asymmetrical 4-window front. Main range has 3 C19 timber sashes with eyebrow dormers and smaller 2-light casement on each floor at upper end. 3 C18/19 hornless timber sashes 8 panes over 8 panes and off-centre single- storey thatched porch with 6 panelled door in deep reveal, the two upper panels with glazing. Single 2-light casement in lower extension. 2 partially patched raised cruck trusses over hall with cambered collars with mortices in the soffits but arch-braces removed. The blades, supporting single set of purlins and possibly formerly second tier of threaded purlins above fail to meet but are joined by a short saddle with no ridge purlin above. Heavy smoke-blackening extends to lower end but not into upper end, though restricted roofspace impeded close inspection and roof timbers may be replaced at this end. The barn has been much altered and original roof trusses replaced except fourth truss from east end which has raised cruck blades with short yoke, and original purlins extending to flanking trusses only. Collar and arch-bracing removed.
