2/40 Milton House -
- II
House, reputedly formerly the vicarage. Probably circa 1500 remodelled in late C16 early C17 and again in early C18 and early C19 with C19 additions. Rendered stone rubble and cob walls. Gable-ended slate roof. 2 rendered brick axial stacks. Plan: complex development of plan, the original form of which is not entirely clear due to the many alterations which have taken place. Probably originated as a 3- room-and-through-passage plan with lower end apparently to the left. Few early features survive apart from the remains of a smoke-blackened truss and a C16 fireplace in the lower room and an internal jetty at the lower end of the hall over the passage. Whether this was an original arrangement or not and when the hall was finally ceiled is not clear but its stack was inserted, more unusually at its inner end. The good quality C18 panelling in the hall suggests the house was remodelled slightly at that time and further extensive alterations were made at intervals, during the C19 when it was refenestrated, extended at the left-hand end and had substantial rear additions made. These incorporated the building of a small stair projection at the rear of the passage with a kitchen wing added behind the hall, an outshut behind the inner room and a wing projecting to the rear of the lower end. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 7-window front with aid - late C19 8-pane sashes at the centre a contemporary 16-pane sash to the right on 1st floor with French windows below. Early C19 12-pane hornless sash to left on 1st floor with similar 16-pane sash below. Later C19 double-gabled glazed conservatory porch at centre. Rear elevation has mid C19 hipped roof wing to left of centre with outshot to its left and smaller stairwing with roundheaded window to its right. At right end of house long wing projects back. Interior: hall has 2 stage early C18 bolection moulded panelling on front wall and lower side partition. Above the latter a beam projects with panelling above it and carved with apparently contemporary robust trailing fruit and flower motif along edge. Fielded 2-panel shutters to windows. Lower room has large C16 granite fireplace, roll-moulded with Tudor arcn. The room above this has complete early C18 bolection moulded panelling. Victorian staircase with chamfered square newels which have finals, closed string and turned balusters. The roof is all late C19 or early C20 King post structure apart from one smoke-blackened cruck truss cut off above morticed arch-braced collar over internal jetty. The quality and early date of internal features in this house belies its plain C19 facade.
