TALATON SX 09 NE 6/158 Terrace walls and steps adjoining to south of Escot GV II

Terrace walls and steps. 1838, contemporary with the main house, by Henry Roberts for Sir John Kennaway. Volcanic stone ashlar with limestone ashlar parapets and vases. The lawn on the south and west sides of Escot (q.v.) is on a raised terrace. The front (south) edge is revetted by a battered wall of rock-faced stone blocks and the centre breaks forward with canted sides. Immediately to east of the centre projection the terrace is 2 stages. Steps lead down to a path which leads round the east end to another flight of steps, these down to the basement level of the entrance forcourt. there is a small flight of steps down from the terrace at the west end of the front. Along the top is a limestone parapet containing balustrades of stone balusters in the same style as the parapet of the main house. The parapet is missing from the front of the half terrace; there are a series of stone vases here.
