6/42 Porch House

GV II

House, at one time 2 dwellings. Late C17 or earlier in origin with C20 alterations and modernisation. Whitewashed and rendered, probably cob and stone rubble; asbestos slate roof, gabled at ends (thatched until at least 1960, old list description); 2 rear lateral stacks with brick shafts to the main range, left end stack to south block. Plan: Sited in the centre of the village, the main range to the right (north) is a single depth plan, 2 rooms wide with a central entrance; various rear additions including a wing at right angles to the main range. A second block, to the south, is set back from the main range but on the same axis. The main range is C17 in origin: the south block (not inspected internally at time of survey) may be later. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2:2 window front, the south block set back at the left end. The main range has an approximately central 2-storey gabled porch with an outer plank door and a 1-light first floor window. To the left of the porch a 4-pane fixed window, probably C19, to the right 2 ground floor windows, one a 3-light C19 casement with glazing bars the other a C20 1-light window with one 3-light C19 casement with glazing bars to the first floor. The left return of the main range has 1 3-light first floor window and 1 2-light ground floor window, both C19 casements with glazing bars. The south block has a garage door front left, a C20 half-glazed front door in the centre, a 2-light casement to ground floor right and 2 first floor similar casements. Interior: The left hand room of the main range has a late C17 scroll-stopped chamfered crossbeam and an open fireplace with a timber lintel which has been partly dressed-off. No bread ovens were found in the main range during renovations. Roof: Not inspected, timbers said to be replaced when the thatch was removed. In a prominent position in the village centre. The present owners have post cards showing the building thatched and before the garage was introduced.
