Details
SY 18 NE BRANSCOMBE 7/13 Lancaster Cottage and York - Cottage
14.10.80 II - 2 cottages. Probably mid-late C17, renovated circa 1980 and York Cottage was partly rebuilt after a fire circa 1986. Whitewashed local stone rubble; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof. Plan: long block containing 2 cottages and facing east-north-east, say east. Lancaster Cottage is a 3-room plan cottage at the left (south) end. The centre room is heated by an axial stack backing onto the left (southern) room. York Cottage is a 2-room plan cottage at the right end. The left room is heated by an axial stack backing onto the right end room. Since no proper internal inspection was available at the time of this survey it is not possible to determine the original layout. Nevertheless it seems likely that there was a 3-room plan farmhouse here originally in the section between the stacks. An early C20 photograph of the place in possession of the owner of York Cottage shows the place with barns each end. Presumably these were brought into domestic use when the farmhouse was converted to cottages. The end room of Lancaster Cottage is narrower than the main block. York Cottage was extensively rebuilt after a fire circa 1986. 2 storeys. Exterior: irregular 5-window front of various C19 and C20 casements. The oldest are a pair on the first floor which contain rectangular panes of leaded glass. The latest are the circa 1986 aluminium-framed casements without glazing bars. The doorway to Lancaster House is left of centre and it contains a glazed C20 door; this may well be the original farmhouse doorway. The doorway to York Cottage is at the right end,(in the rebuilt section). It contains a C20 door with contemporary thatch-roofed porch. Interior: York Cottage was mostly rebuilt after the fire of 1986 and therefore has no early carpentry detail. Lancaster Cottage was not available for inspection at the time of this survey although neatly chamfered beams were seen in the main rooms.
