Details

CHAWLEIGH CHAWLEIGH SS 71 SW 2/47 Bank Cottage GV II

Cottage. Mid C17, refurbished in late C19. Plastered cob on rubble footings, most of front rebuilt with blocks of local rubble rougly laid to courses and exposed; similar stone rubble stack topped with C19 brick; thatch roof and slate to service addition. Cottage faces south-west. Original main block has 2-room plan with larger right (south-eastern) room served by projecting end stack. Single storey porch and service room added in late C19 around right front corner. C20 outshot on left end Main block is 2 storeys with irregular 2-window front of late C19 casements with glazing bars. Ground floor windows are larger with segmental arches over. Roof is gable-ended. Door at right end of front behind late C19 plastered rubble and slate-roofed extension and includes late C19 glazed double doors to left of a 2- light casement with glazing bars. Interior main ground floor room has Cl7 crossbeam and rubble fireplace with inserted or relined side oven. Soffits of beam and oak fireplace lintel both chamfered with scroll stops. Winder stair to rear left is possibly original. Roof inaccessible. Distinctive late C19 joinery detail, rustic but well made.
