TALATON SY 09 NE 6/191 Marks Farmhouse - GV II

Former farmhouse. C16 or C17. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; cob or stone rubble stack with brick chimneyshaft; slate roof, formerly thatch. Plan: apparently a 3-room-and-through-passage plan farmhouse facing west. The left (north) end is the inner room. Next is the former hall with front projecting lateral stack and projecting window bay alongside. Service end room across the passage the right (south) end. Since no internal inspection was available at the time of this survey it is not possible to determine the historic development of the house. Nevertheless it seems likely that it began in the C16 as some form of open hall house. Now 2 storeys. Exterior: irregular 2-window front of C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars, the left ones in the hall bay. Similar windows in the other sides. The passage front doorway is right of centre and contains a probably C19 part-glazed plank door. Main roof is gable-ended. Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey but is said to contain old beams and the like.
