Details
EGGESFORD SS 61 SE 1/61 Rose Cottage including stables - and coach-house adjoining to south GV II Cottage, former lodge to Eggesford House, and stables with coachhouse. Circa 1860- 70. Exposed mustone rubble with Hathersleigh stone ashlar quoins and detail; stone rubble stacks and chimney shafts with original cream-coloured chimney pots; coated slate roofs with crested ridge tiles. Cottage faces north, away from the road. Main front range has 2-room and central staircase plan with end stacks and 2-storey porch. Service block under parallel roof to rear of left (east) room with rear stack. The stables and coachhouse adjoin to the rear under another parallel roof and face onto the road to south. 2 storeys. Victorian Gothic style. Symmetrical 1:1:1 window front. Porch projects a little with gabled roof. The outer 2-centred arch has chamfered surround and shelters original 4-panel door. First floor lancet. Either side of porch are ground floor 2-light windows with pointed arches. Right gable end has similar 3-light window on ground floor and 2-light first floor window. Left gable end has 2-window front of lancets, those on ground floor are blocked. Similar but not identical windows in service block. All windows have glazing bars. Interior not inspected. The coach house and stables are built of snecked sandstone. It is gable-ended. Coach house door to right has flat head and rounded corners. Stable door to left has low segmental head with central keystone and is flanked by narrow fixed pane windows containing diamond-shaped panes of leaded glass.
