Details
WEMBWORTHY BRIDGE REEVE SS 61 SE 1/6 Bowerings Cottage - - II Cottage. Late C17-early C18 with C19 additions. Plastered cob on rubble footings; cob stacks topped with C20 brick; thatch roof, corrugated iron to outshots. Originally a 2-room plan cottage facing south-east with central stair and end stacks. Outshots to rear may be original. C19 addition as a third room on right (north-east) end set back slightly from main front. C19 outshot on left end. 2 storeys. Nearly symmetrical 3-window front to main block with fourth window on C19 extension. The 3 first floor windows of main block are possibly C18 3-light oak flat-faced mullion windows containing rectangular panes of leaded glass. These have thatch eyebrows over. The rest are C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars. The front door is central to main block behind a C19 timber porch with hipped thatch roof. Main roof is gable-ended to left and hipped to right. Interior is little-modernised. There are no ground floor crossbeams. Instead a series of joists of large scantling. Right room fireplace is blocked. Left room fireplace has stone rubble jambs and plain soffit-chamfered oak lintel and includes an original cloam oven to left and a C19 brick-lined oven to right with cast iron door. Roof inaccessible but feet of probably original A-frame trusses show.
