Details
SY 18 NE BRANSCOMBE STREET (north side)
7/52 Pitt Cottage - GV II Cottage, maybe 2 cottages originally. Probably C18. Exposed local stone rubble; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof. Plan: 4-room plan cottage facing south-east and set gable-end onto the lane. At the right (north-east) end, away from the lane, has a gable-end stack. Next to it, right of centre is a smaller unheated room (the present kitchen). Left of centre a room with rear lateral stack and at the left end another small unheated room. In the C20 the partition between these 2 left rooms was removed and the rooms united. Present doorway directly into the right end room. Originally it is thought that there were two 2-room cottages here; each comprising 1 heated room with a smaller unheated room. 2 storeys. Exterior: irregular front fenestration with 4 ground floor windows and 2 first floor windows; late C19 and C20 casements, most with glazing bars. Front doorway towards the right end contains a C20 part-glazed door. Roof is gable-ended. Interior has plain carpentry detail where exposed. Roof not exposed. This cottage is one of an attractive group of thatch-roofed houses which make up the hamlet of Street.
