WHIMPLE THE SQUARE, SY 0497-0597 10/230 Churchyard walls on south and east - sided including south gate of the Church of St Mary GV II

Churchyard walls and gate. Probably 1845, contemporary with the Church rebuild; parts may be older. Snecked volcanic stone with ashlar coping. The churchyard is built up as a terrace above The square. The walls revet the terrace. On the south- east corner the wall follows the sinuous course of the road as it returns from the south side to the east side. South gate, at the base of a flight of granite steps, has square section piers of lightly rusticated ashlar and has granite pyramid caps. Probably late C19 wrought iron gates richly ornamented with scrolls.
