Details
BLACKAWTON MILLCOMBE SX85SW Lilac Cottage 2/37 II Cottage. Circa late C17 or early C18, probably extended later in C18 or early C19. Rendered and whitewashed stone rubble. Asbestos slate roof with gabled ends, originally thatched according to the owner. Rendered axial and corner stacks. Plan and development: The existing house had a 2-room plan main range. The larger left-hand room was probably the original house originally of 2-room plan with a small unheated room to the left and a large room to the right heated from a gable end stack (now axial) and with a stair turret beside the stack at the back. The partition between the 2 rooms had been removed. The small 1-room plan part to the right is probably on C18 or C19 addition; it is heated from a fireplace in the right-hard front corner and has a C20 2- storey extension at the back. Behind the left end of the original part is a C19 outbuilding with doorways on the outer left-hand side. There is another C19 single storey outshut attached to the right-hand front corner. Lilac Cott is built high up above and at right angles to the road and is built into the bank at the rear. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window south east front. To left of centre a C19 2-light casement with glazing bars on the ground and first floors, the ground floor with a slate hoodmould. To the left on the ground floor a small C20 casement. Original doorway to right of centre with a late C19 glazed door and slated canopy. To right another doorway with a C20 glazed door now enclosed within a C20 glazed conservatory in the angle with the single storey outbuilding projecting on the right-hand corner. At the back a large semi-circular stair turret built into the ground which is higher at the rear than at the front. To the left a C20 2-storey flat roof extension. Interior only observed from the front windows with permission. Exposed rough ceiling joists. The fireplace in the larger left-hand room has been reduced in size. The stair turret is said to contain a stone newel stair. The roof structure is said to have been replaced.
