BUCKLAND MONACHORUM SX 46 NE 3/34 Lillipit Cottage
- II
Small house. C17 with C19 and C20 alterations. Granite and slate rubble walls with gable ended slate roof. 3 rubble stacks, one axial, one lateral at the front and one at right-hand gable end of original house. Original plan difficult to interpret from present layout; appears to have consisted of 2 rooms, the right-hand one heated by a front lateral stack. This room is deeper and projects at the rear from the left-hand part which now consists of a room at the front which is divided from a lobby at the rear by an axial stack. The unusual position of this stack and the lack of early features to the fireplace suggest that it may be inserted. The original purpose of the lobby behind is unclear, it now houses a C20 staircase. The building cannot have extended further to the right from the evidence of 2 original windows and the ground is higher at the left-hand end but it is possible that it originally extended further to the rear. Late C20 extension added at right-hand end. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical, 1 window front with late C20 3-light casement on 1st floor at left-hand end. Below it is C20 plank and glazed door with wood lintel above. To its right is single light C20 casement which has chamfered granite lintel. To the right the roof line drops and the massive lateral stack projects with set-offs, a later brick shaft and rectangular oven projection to its left. At right-hand gable end is a 2 light granite mullion window with hoodmould which has flower motif in labels. Late C20 extension set back from right-hand gable end. At rear the left- hand side of the house projects with a 2-light granite mullion window on ground floor. Other windows are small-paned mainly C19 casements. Interior: right-hand room has chamfered wood lintel to fireplace, stops are indistinct.
