Details
CLAUGHTON SD 54 SW 8/55 Duckett's Farmhouse 17-4-1967 - II House, probably late C17 with remains of timber frame possibly C16, altered. Sandstone rubble with slate roof and brick chimneys. 2 storeys. Main range of 2 bays, with one-bay cross-wing projecting at right. Windows of main range appear to be later C19 and are of 3 sashed lights with glazing bars, with chamfered mullions and with chamfered stone surrounds. The windows of the cross-wing have glazing bars and a central mullion. Door, to right of left-hand bay, has chamfered stone surround. Chimneys on left-hand gable and to right of door. Interior not accessible at time of survey, but contains remains of timber frame of light scantling, including evidence for a jetty on the south wall of the cross-wing. The building will be described and illustrated in a forthcoming book by Watson, R.C. and McClintock, M.E. on traditional houses in the Claughton area. Their opinion on the development of the house is that a timber-framed cross-wing, divided into a buttery and heated parlour, was added onto an existing building with clay or turf walls and that some timber framing was added to this existing building at the same time. They believe that a lintel inscribed '1690' now in the farmyard may date the rebuilding of the external walls in stone.
