6/102 Stable block adjoining South Yarde - Farmhouse at the west
GV II
Stable block. Probably an early C19 remodelling of an earlier building. Stone rubble with a course of cob below the eaves; corrugated iron roof, gabled at ends (formerly thatched). Plan: Adjoining the lower (west) end of South Yarde to which it is linked by a covered way that gives access to the farmyard. Rectangular on plan. Internal carpentry suggests a pre C19 date (chamfered crossbeams). Exterior: Single storey with a loft. Asymmetrical south front with a C19 plank door to left of centre flanked by windows with an additional window to the right, the windows with segmental cut stone arches. Loft door above plank door, small loft window high under the eaves to the right. Interior: Chamfered crossbeams support the loft floor. The stall partitions are intact. Part of an unusually well-preserved group of farmbuildings at South Yarde and extremely important to the setting of this outstanding grade I medieval house, Mrs Rolle, the owner of South Yarde Farmhouse, has a photograph showing the stable thatched.
