3/107 Beckside Cottage and Ropley - GV II Pair of cottages. Early - mid C19, Beckside Cottage was renovated circa 1980. Colour-washed local stone and flint rubble; stone rubble stack topped with C19 brick; thatch roof. Plan: pair of contemporary cottages built alongside the lane facing south-east. Originally they each had a mirror plan of the other; each a 2-room plan cottage with unheated outer rooms and the larger inner room heated by an axial stack in the party wall serving back-to-back fireplaces. Beckside Cottage is the left (south-west) cottage and Ropley the right one. Ropley appears only superficially modernised but circa 1980 Beckside Cottage was refurbished and the front doorway was blocked and a new doorway inserted in the left end wall. At the same time a single storey extension built at right angles to rear. Both cottages are 2 storeys. Exterior: overall irregular 3-window front of C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars. The right 2-window section of Ropley appears to be the original arrangement; a nearly symmetrical arrangement around a central doorway which contains a late C19 - early C20 plank door under a contemporary thatched hood. In the Beckside Cottage section a couple of windows have been blocked and the front doorway blocked by a small C20 bay window. The roof is hipped to left and half-hipped to right. Interior: not inspected although some plain carpentry detail was seen. This pair of cottages form part of a group of attractive thatch-roofed cottages with Thatch (q.v) and Thatchcote (q.v).
