SY 29 SW SOUTHLEIGH SOUTHLEIGH

6/134 Willoughby chest tomb - approximately 4 metres east of south aisle of the Church of St Lawrence GV II Chest tomb. Dated 1616 in memory of Henry Willoughby. Beerstone ashlar with some local flint rubble to rear. The chest tomb is rectangular in section on a moulded plinth and with a soffit-moulded flat lid. A rectangular plaque stands slightly proud on the south side and the plinth breaks forward below it. This plaque is inscribed with a mixture of large Roman and half uncial capitals and records the death of Henry Willoughby in 1616. The west end contains a carved armorial bearing.
