6/202 Former United Methodist Church (formerly listed as "Premises occupied by Magistrates' Court 7.6.1971 and Old People's Club")

Methodist Church, 1855-7, by Noble (Pevsner); now premises of Rawtenstall OAP Association. Ashlar, slate roof. Rectangular plan 5 x 6 bays. On sloping site, rising to the rear, gable end to road raised on ashlar-walled terrace c.3 metres high; 2 storeys, symmetrical, in classical style: giant tetrastyle Corinthian portico with plain frieze, prominent dentilled cornice and pediment; segmental-headed openings with architraves on both floors, 2 doors and 3 sashed windows with glazing bars at ground floor, 5 similar windows above; Corinthian pilasters and clasping pilasters. Pilastered 6-bay side walls have round-headed windows on both floors, with pilastered jambs and moulded heads, also sashed with glazing bars. (Later addition to rear not included in the item). History: promoted by Whitehead brothers of Holly Mount (q.v.) following disagreements at Longholme Methodist Chapel (q.v.).
