HEAPEY COPTHURST BROW SD 52 SE 5/116 Johnson's Hillock - Top Lock House GV II

Lock keeper's house with attached office (which is now shop), probably c.1816. Coursed squared sandstone, stone slate roof. Built on slope of canal embankment, single depth, 3 bays with office at left end. Three-storey rear, 2 storey front, symmetrical, with gable chimneys, central boarded door with plain stone surround, 2 windows at ground floor and 3 above, those at the sides of 2 sashed lights each and that over the door a 4-pane sash. Lean-to single-storey office at left end has a similar door to the left and a sashed window without glazing bars. All windows have stone sills and heads. Item is part of Johnson's Hillock lock group on Leeds-Liverpool Canal, all the other elements of which are listed in Whittle-le-Woods CP (q.v.).
