HESKIN BANNISTER GREEN SD 51 SW 13/124 19.6.85 Hampson's Farmhouse GV II
Farmhouse, now house. C17, altered in C18, extended in C19; with cottage attached in C18. Coursed thin sandstone rubble finished with brick, stone slate roof with gable chimneys. Two-bay end-baffle-entry plan, entrance moved; C19 extension to rear of 1st bay, single-bay cottage at left end. Formerly 1½ storeys, raised to 2 low storeys with 12 courses of brick; former doorway at left end now blocked, inserted door offset left of centre, one inserted window to the left and another to the right, all these with large rectangular stone lintels, two 2-light sliding sashes in the brick part of the wall above. Right gable wall shows line of earlier and more steeply-pitched roof, and has a blocked window opening in the old gable. Rear has a 3-light sliding sash window to the 2nd bay but is mostly covered by a wide C19 extension. Cottage attached at left end, of 2 lower storeys in coursed squared stone, has a board door to the left and a damaged 3-light sliding sash on each floor; its rear wall is mostly coursed thin sandstone rubble but is finished with squared sandstone, and has a 2-light sliding sash with glazing bars at 1st floor, and a small stairlight. Interior: housepart in 1st bay has inglenook with stone heck, straight oak bressummer with cyma-stopped chamfer, and one lateral beam with deep rounded chamfer; timber-framed partition wall to service end has studded board door with nicked head (leading to pantry), a staircase between this and the front wall, blocked former doorway to parlour like the first; parlour has lateral beam with stopped deep chamfer; 1st floor has wattle-and-daub smoke hood, partition wall incorporating original collar truss with framed-in doorway (now blocked), batten and board door re-hung beside this. Despite external alteration, a good example of very small C17 farmhouse.
