HIGH STREET
(South West Side)
No. 17
II
House, 1700. Narrow red brick, Flemish bond, with steeply
pitched roof now of interlocking tiles. Tumbled gable end
parapets on moulded brick kneelers. Original flush end stacks
each with rectangular bases and surmounted by two grouped shafts
set diagonally. Originally a T-plan house, now with rear range
demolished. Two storeys and attic. One dormer. Plain three
brick band at gable end eaves height and between storeys. C19
arches to range of three recessed hung sashes. At ground floor
original, narrow gauged brick arches to two C19 similar windows
in either side of doorway. Original doorcase of flanking red
brick pilasters with plain capitals and bases supporting wood
pediment, with modillions and dentils. The tympanum is filled
with thistle design in plaster. Each gable end has a lozenge
pattern in burnt brick headers. A brick at ground floor left
hand has 1700 and initials A.C. Interior: Not seen, but said
to have been very altered in the 1960's when the staircase was
removed. The service wing was timber framed. It has been
suggested that the thistle is associated with Scottish prisoners
of war (taken at Battle of Dunbar (1650) some of whom were used
in drainage of the fens and who settled at Over.
