STOKE FLEMING BOWDEN SX84NW Bowden House 5/149 26.1.67 GV II

House. C18 remodelled and extended in early C19 and with some late C20 alterations. The deeds are said to record the date 1723 for the building and 1823 for the remodelling and extension. Plastered stone rubble. Slate roof with gabled ends and modillion eaves cornice. Gable end stacks with rendered shafts. The shafts of the stacks at the ends of the main central block have moulded cornices. Plan: The main central block is the original C18 house; it has an almost square double-depth plan with 2 principal rooms at the front with an entrance passage between leading to a stairhall and closet behind the left hand room and the kitchen behind the right hand room. In the early C19 the house was remodelled and extended when symmetrical wings were added set back to the left and right of the back rooms. The left hand wing contains the drawing room with access via an axial passage from the stairhall and the right hand wing is a service range with an entrance passage between it and the main block and an outshut on the right hand end. The house is raised on a basement which forms a terrace at the front on which there was an early C19 verandah. The early C19 remodelling also involved the replacement of most of the internal joinery including the stairs. Exterior: 2 storeys, attic and cellar. Symmetrical 2:3:2 bay east front. The centre 3 bays section is the original house and the flanking 2 bays set back are the early C19 wings around which the modillion cornice of the main block continues. All the windows are 12-pane sashes in segmental-headed openings and all are C19 except for the ground floor windows of the left hand wing, the left hand of which is a facsimile and the right hand a garden door. Central doorway with C18 6-panel door, the bottom panels flush, the top panels glazed and doorcase with panelled reveals and a late C20 Tuscan porch which replaces a C19 verandah (which is described in the former list as a "wood pillared verandah with slate roof"). In the angle with the right hand wing there is a flight of steps up to the service doorway which has a plank door. The lean-to porch serves this doorway and a doorway to the cellars. The outshut on the right hand end of the right hand wing has exposed stone rubble walls and a C20 garden door at the front. The new elevation was not inspected but the large round-headed stair window can be seen from inside the house; it is a sash with glazing bars, probably C19. Interior: The principal front rooms and the hall have what look like C18 moulded cornices. The ground floor has a complete set of early C19 moulded 6-panel doors and panelled internal window shutters while the first floor 6- panel doors are all C18. The open well staircase is early C19 and has a scrolled open string and stick balusters with a mahogany hand rail ramped up to column newels and wreathed over the curtail. The servants staircase to the attic is a dog-leg with stick balusters. The right hand front room has an early C19 marble chimneypiece and flanking alcoves with mahogany veneered cupboards. The front left hand room has a reused C18 style chimneypiece. The ground floor room in the left hand wing has a reused Cl9 marble chimneypiece. The rear right hand kitchen has been refitted in the C20.
