CHUDLEIGH FORE STREET (east side), Chudleigh SX 8679 6/41 No 11, including iron railings to the front
GV II
House, formerly Working Men's Reading Room and Library, established 1877 (White's Directory). Stone rubble, the front elevation colourwashed and plastered; slate roof, gabled at ends; stacks on north and south sides. Eclectic late C19 style with robust Venetian detail. 2 storeys and attic. Rectangular plan, the gable end to the road with a central entrance. The symmetrical 3-bay gabled front has a deep bracketed cornice returned over the corner pilasters to form an open pediment; the pilasters have fielded panels. Central Tuscan porch with a half-glazed front door with panelled reveals and soffit. On either side of the front door slightly recessed canted bay windows the architraves rising as a segmental arch above the centre light with scallop shell and foliage carving; sash windows with glazing bars, The right hand bay has been altered to incorporate a C20 door. Above the porch a first floor sash with a shouldered architrave and cornice carried on short pilasters with scallop carving. Round-headed sashes to left and right with shouldered architraves, keystones and brackets. 1 second floor Venetian window with glazing bars in the gable. Iron railings enclose a narrow area in front of the building. Interior not inspected but contemporary features may survive. The showy elevation to Fore Street makes an important contribution to the townscape.
