GRESSINGHAM SD 56 NE Gressingham Hall and former stables 7/84 adjoining 4-10-1967
GV II*
House, late C17th, extended mid C18th. Slobbered rubble with stone slate roof. Earlier part comprises a front range with rear wings parallel to each other. 2 storeys with attic, 5 bays, with 2 drip courses. Windows of 2 lights, rebated and chamfered with mullions. Attic has similar short windows to bays 2 and 4 only. The door, in the central bay, has a moulded surround and shaped lintel with no inscription. The gables have copings with kneelers, and chimneys with weathered offsets. Both return walls have mullioned windows to the rear wings. Set back to the right is a 2-bay extension, probably C18th despite having 2-light rebated and chamfered attic windows. On the 1st floor are sashed windows with glazing bars and architraves. The ground-floor window is of 3 lights with flat-faced mullions. The door, in the left-hand bay, has a cyma-moulded surround under a stone porch with pilasters. Adjoining to the right is a 2-storey former coach house and stable, now mostly part of the house. At the left it has a wide moulded doorway with elliptical arch and keystone, now blocked and containing a smaller door. Above is a window which has an architrave with round head and keystone. To the right is a modern garage entrance. At the far right is one bay which has 2-light flat-faced mullioned windows. Inside, the right-hand front room has a bolection- moulded stone fireplace. In the left-hand rear wing an open-well stair rises to the attic and has barley-sugar balusters, moulded handrail, and square newels with ball finials. The C18th extension has a shouldered fireplace with moulded cornice mantel, and a pine stair with closed string and splat balusters. A 1st floor room is lined with raised and fielded panelling. The stone fireplace is flanked by fluted pilasters and surmounted by a small swan-necked pediment in stone. The roof over this part of the house has hardwood king post trusses of C18th type.
