Details

SX 86 NW IPPLEPEN 2/110 Bilver Cottage - - II Cottage. Circa late C17 with C20 alterations and extension. Rendered rubble walls. Gable ended slate roof. Rendered rubble gable end stack at left end. Originally 2-room and through-passage plan, each room heated by gable end stack. Newel stair rising beside stack in right-hand room. C20 leanto extension added along rear wall. Passage removed to enlarge left-hand room. Fireplace removed from right-hand room to insert window. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front, 1 window on first floor, all C20 casements with glazing bars. 2-light to ground floor left and first floor and 1 light to right on ground floor. C20 plank door to left of centre set back into wall under slate porch hood. Late C20 single storey extension at right end. Interior: each principal room has a heavy cross beam with narrow unstopped chamfer. In the left-hand room there is also a half-beam with mortices for a stud partition. Wooden newel stairs (treads renewed) in right-hand room. The 2 C17 roof trusses survive which have curved feet, threaded purlins and collars halved onto the principals with notched dovetail joint.
