Entrance steps with integral viewing platform on open-topped turret. Dated
1653 (see below). Sited on steep bank which separates garden above from
road below, the steps rising from the east parallel to the retaining wall
of the garden and landing at the open side of an enclosed platform on top
of a short turret projecting from the bank. Sandstone. Flight of 8 steps
protected on the outer side by a sloped parapet with roll-moulded coping,
which carries round the viewing platform and has looplights in the sides.
Said to incorporate a stone bearing the initials of Robert Mawdesley and
date 1653 (VCH Lancs VIp.98, with illustration), but now (1985) heavily
overgrown.
