Details
SX 8366 IPPLEPEN FORE STREET, Ipplepen 6/137 Vine Cottage - 23.8.55 G.V. II House. Early C18, possibly remodelling of early building, C19 extension. Limestone rubble walls. Steeply pitched hipped slate roof with coved cornice at sprocketted eaves. 1 rendered rubble axial stack, 2 gable end brick stacks, the right-hand one is rendered. Double depth plan with central entrance hall and 2 principal front rooms, with probably smaller service rooms behind. Principal rooms heated by gable end stacks.1 room extension added in C19 to right end in similar style also heated by gable end stack. Probably C19 rear additions. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window front comprising symmetrical 3-window part with central door to original house to left and 2-window extension at right with straight joint between. All windows are circa mid C19 sashes in original openings with flat brick arches with narrow projecting keystones. These are reproduced in C19 extension. C20 gabled conservatory/porch with part glazed door. Fire insurance mark above window over door. Low stone wall almost immediately in front of house has iron railings on top which have patterned wrought iron panels. Interior inaccessible at time of survey but may contain good C18 features. This house occupies a prominent position in the centre of Ipplepen and its relatively unspoilt C18 facade forms an important feature of the street.
