Details
SX 8366 IPPLEPEN PATERNOSTER LANE 6/192 Paternoster House - including Wall and Door adjoining North - II House and adjoining wall with doorway. Circa early C19 refashioned probably in circa 1830-40 when additions were built on the right (south) end and at the rear (east). Rendered probably stone rubble. Slate roof with gable ends. Moulded cast iron gutler at front with lion masks. Rendered gable end chimney stacks. The original house was a 2-room plan with a wide central hall containing the stairs to the left, each room heated by a gable end stacks. The services are in a small parallel range to the rear of the right hand room. In circa 1830-40 a 2-storey 1-room plan wing was added to the rear of the left hand room overlapping the stair hall from which it has access; this wing has a parallel roof with the front range. Also in circa 1830-40 a 1-room plan addition was built at the right end flush with the front but shallower depth than the original house. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-window range plus 1-window circa 1830-40 addition to right. Sashes with glazing bars; ground floor early C19 16-pane sashes; first floor 12-pane sashes, centre and right hand first floor are later with horns. Central doorway with 4-panel door with plain rectangular fanlight and late C19 or early C20 glazed porch. The addition to right has a 12-pane 1st floor sash with horns and a small fixed-light window on the ground floor left with 9 panes with intersecting glazing bars in the 4-centred arch head. Circa 1830-40 addition at rear of left end has bow window on ground and first floor of gable end;the ground floor has a pair of 12-pane bowed sashes the first floor one 12-pane bowed sash. Including short section of wall to left of front; probably circa 1830-40, rendered with wooden battlements and taller terminal pier; doorway through to garden has a 4-centred headed doorpane and a half-glazed door with intersecting glazing bars and flush bottom panels. Interior: staircase has stack balusters and square newels; the bottom newel is turned. Left hand rook has simple shoulded cornice and simple wooden chimney piece with round-headed panels to the pilasters. Much of the original joinery survives including panelled doors, cupboards etc. An attractive house, little altered since the C19 both externally and internally.
