STOKENHAM BEESON SX84SW Orchard Cottage 8/187 II
Small house. Circa late C17 or possibly a circa late C17 remodelling of an earlier house; with C19 alterations. Roughcast stone rubble. Grouted and cement slurried scantle slate roof with gabled ends and clay ridge tiles, half hipped over front bay. Integral stack at right hand end with short brick shaft. Plan: A small 2 room and through passage plan house, the larger right hand room has a gable end stack and the small left hand room is unheated. The projecting bay and integral stair turret on the front of the right hand room might be circa C18 or C19 outbuilding attached to the right hand end where the ground level is lower. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical front with half hipped 2 storey projecting bay on right with catslide roof over integral stair turret to its right and doorway to left with C19 plank door and slate lean-to canopy on wooden braces. C19 2 and 3-light casements with glazing bars and some with slate sills, ground floor left C19 2-light horizontally sliding sash with glazing bars. Rear Elevation: blind except for first floor C19 2-light casement breaking eaves to left of centre, window below and passage rear doorway to right of centre. At right hand north end a circa late C18 or C19 outbuilding with a lower corrugated iron roof. Interior: Cross-beam and half beam in right hand end wall of right hand room has thin chamfer with stops and blocked fireplace. Through passage lined with C19 matchboarding stone newel stairs with C19 plank door at bottom. First floor and roof space not inspected but feet of principal rafters are said to be exposed.
