KINGSKERSWELL
COLE'S LANE, Kingskerswell
No. 1
II
Small house. Circa late C17, altered in C18, extended and modernised in C20.
Rendered rubble wals with half-hipped thatched roof. 2 gable end rendered rubble
stacks, the left hand one projects and the right hand one rises from the eaves at the
front of the gable, both have brick shafts.
2-room plan with wide central passage, with inserted staircase, both rooms heated by
gable end stack although the right-hand end stack may not be original. C20
extension at right-hand end.
2 storeys with attic. Regular 3-window front with single storey flat roofed C20
extension at right hand end. To left and on ground floor right are circa mid C20
metal frame casements without glazing bars. On first floor right of centre and
right are 2-light late C20 casements with glazing bars. On ground floor right of
centre is single light C19 casement with glazing bars. Late C20 gabled porch at
centre with 2-light casement on front wall and part glazed door on right-hand side.
Interior: left-hand room has open fireplace with new wood lintel which has been
inserted beneath the original one. Insubstantial frequently spaced cross beams in
this room are chamfered with hollow step stops. These probably also survive in the
right-hand room at present concealed. On the first floor one C18 2-fielded panel
door survives. Roof has fairly rough C18/C19 straight principals with lapped and
pegged collars.
