Details

BROADWOODWIDGER ASHMILL SX 39 NE 3/49 Carey Cottage - GV II House. Circa late C18/early C19. Colourwashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, slate roof half-hipped at right end, hipped at left end. Axial stone stack to right, C20 rendered stack at left end. 2-room single depth plan, originally with the right-hand room only heated and a probably integral storage room with loft over and separate entrance adjoining at the right end. Direct entry with a short screen to the right into the principal right- hand room which has an rear stair behind a partition. A stone rubble lean-to adjoins at the left. Small C20 single-storey flat-roofed addition at rear. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-bay front with a central half-glazed front door under a sloping corrugated iron canopy carried on timber brackets. 2-light casement, 3 panes per light above front door is probably late C19. Other windows are 3-light casements, 8 panes per light and probably contemporary with the house. The adjoining storage room has a separate entrance on the front and a loft entrance on the right return. Interior The principal room (right-hand) has exposed joists, the fireplace is blocked. Circa late C18 panelled door into lower end. Largely unmodernized interior. The integral store at the higher end is an unusual survival.
