------------------------------------

SX 86 NE KINGSKERSWELL NORTH WILBOROUGH 3/179 Sunnyside and Ladysmith Cottage GV II 2 cottages originally 1 house. C17 much altered in C19 and C20. Rendered rubble walls. Gable ended slate roof with asbestos slate towards left-hand end. At right- hand gable end is squat rendered rubble stack with tapering top; axial rendered brick stack to left of centre. Originally 3-room and through-passage plan with lower room to right heated by gable end stack which has adjoining smoking chamber. Hall heated by axial stack backing onto passage and inner room reputedly formerly had front lateral stack. Divided into 2 cottages probably in C19 at lower end of passage; in Sunnyside to left the passage was blocked at either end to become a small room and a passage inserted along the rear wall incorporating a staircase. Rear outshut added to Ladysmith Cottage probably in C20. 2 storeys. Ladysmith Cottage to right has asymmetrical 2-window front. The first floor left-hand window is circa late C19/early C20 2-light casement with small panes. To its right is taller similar C20 window in dormer. Below it and to the right is late C20 bow window with small panes. Late C20 stable type door to left. Towards right end at an intermediate level is small narrow window which lights the projection at the right-hand gable end housing the smoking chamber. Sunnyside has an asymmetrical 1-window front, 2 to the ground floor, all 2-light casements. The first floor window is in a dormer and is probably C19. The ground floor windows are C20, the right-hand one was originally the doorway to passage. All windows are without glazing bars. projection towards the left end, apparently originally for chimney. C20 conservatory/porch at left-hand gable end has door. Interior: no original features visible in Sunnyside. Ladysmith Cottage contains 2 ovens with stone openings to the left of the modern fireplace. To the right is a C17 smoking chamber, circular with a corbelled stone roof which has a flue at the top. Roof structure completely replaced in late C20. An important feature of this building is the unusual survival of the smoking chamber.
