Details

STOKENHAM CHILLINGTON SX7942 Magnolia and Myrtle Cot 13/196 II

Pair of cottages. Circa late C17 or early C18 altered and possibly extended in C19. Roughcast rendered stone rubble and possibly cob. Thatched roof with gabled ends; eaves of Myrtle Cot at right hand west end are higher. Gable end stacks, right hand with short rendered shaft with slate weathering, the shaft of left hand stack truncated. Plan: Original plan uncertain. Magnolia at left hand east end appears to be the original house of 2-room plan, the left hand room heated from a gable end stack and its right hand room possibly unheated. Myrtle Cot to right west appears to be a 2-room plan extension built as a separate cottage, the right hand west room heated from a gable end stack and the left hand east room unheated. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window range the right hand part Myrtle Cot has higher eaves and tall C19 12-pane fixed light first floor windows, central C20 door with early C20 casement to its left. Magnolia to left has small C19 3-light ground floor casement to left end late C19 glazed and panelled door to right of centre with canopy made from large piece of slate on timber cantilevers. All the windows at the front have slate sills. The rear elevation was not inspected. Interior: Inaccessible at time of survey 1989.
