TL 4843 ICKLETON FROGGE STREET (South-West side) 21/240 No. 10 (The Hovells) 22.11.67 (formerly listed as The Old Farmhouse) GV II Farmhouse now a house. Early C16 with C17 alterations and addition. Timber-framed, exposed and with roughcast render. Painted brick plinth. Plain tiled roofs. Two ridge stacks to left hand and ridge stack with grouped shafts to cross wing with rear gable end stack. Two storeys. L-plan. Main entrance in cross wing with boarded C20 door; Three ground floor casement windows with original side mullioned lights. Two first floor casement windows with leaded lights and one oriel window restored on curved brackets with roll-moulded and hollow chamfered mullions. Cross wing of four timber-framed bays to north of main range with three timber-framed bays. Late C17 single storeyed kitchen extension to west. Interior: exposed timber-frame and substantial floor frames, (hall possibly single storeyed with later inserted floor). Hall chimney, timber-framed with C17 brick insertion occupying half a bay with cross passage to south; one service door with four-centred door head. Windbraced side purlin roofs. Stack to cross wing rebuilt in C17 with bacon hooks in situ. First floor room to cross wing with late C16 or early C17 wall paintings, a lozenge design with rosettes at each angle enclosing a free foliage pattern. Hovells farmhouse was formerly the manor-house of Hovells Manor. RCHM Report 1949 VCH Vol. VI p.234
