KINGSTEIGNTON SX 87 NE 4/104 Clapperland Lodge
II
Lodge to Ugbrooke Park (q.v.). Probably mid/late C19 although Rowan suggests that the design may be by Capability Brown (d. 1783) or by William Spring, clerk of the works for the rebuilding of the house at Ugbrooke, or Joseph Rowe, the architect of the stables (last known work to date 1813). Local limestone rubble with grey limestone quoins and dressings, the dressings painted black; thatched roof, hipped at ends of main range, rear left wing tiled (replacing thatch); rear lateral stack to main range. L plan, the main range single depth, 2 rooms wide with a central entrance lobby with stairs to the rear of the lobby. Rear left kitchen wing at right angles to the main range with a tiled roof; lean-to at rear of kitchen; later conservatory in angle between main range and rear wing. A rustic cottage design similar in some of its details to Ashwell Lodge (q.v.). 2 storeys. Symmetrical 2 window front with regular fenestration, the eaves thatch eyebrowed over 2 first floor 2-light casements with diamond leaded panes and cranked arches ; central C20 timber porch, 3 plank and stud front door with strip hinges. The 2 ground floor windows have cranked arches with keystones and C20 iron casements. On the right return there is a single-storey bow window with a thatched porch on rustic posts around it, the porch presumably re-sited. Interior not inspected. The park at Ugbrooke Park was landscaped by Capability Brown and is remarkable for the absence of sophisticated architectural temples, grottos or seats. The simplicity of the Ashwell and Clapperland Lodges is an important aspect of the character of Ugbrooke Park and the setting of the seat of the the Cliffords. A photograph of the lodge reproduced in Country Life shows the rear left wing thatched with a thatched porch in the centre and a rustic lattice porch to the present front door.
