5/111 Bottoms Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse, probably C17 or earlier, altered. Cruck frame clad with thick sandstone walls with quoins (watershot coursed front, slobbered random rubble rear), slate-clad gambrel roof. Rectangular single-depth 2-bay plan, 1½ storeys, with single-storey extension at right end. Two tie plates under eaves at front and rear. Principal entrance now by board door in extension at right hand end; another board door near left end; between these, one square window in each bay (1st smaller), and some evidence of earlier openings, including a vertical joint marked by jambstones towards the right hand end; 2 windows in lower stage of roof, both flush with it and vertical rectangular. Chimney at left gable and another near right gable. Rear: upper half of wall slightly set back; small square window in 1st bay, larger ones in 2nd bay and in extension. Interior: altered, but partition wall between bays incorporates full cruck truss (details concealed); staircase in front inner corner of 1st bay.
