Details
DUNCHIDEOCK SX 88 NE Throttle Kenniford and cottage 3/14 adjoining at the north west - GV II
Pair of cottages. C18 or earlier. Cob on stone rubble, whitewashed and rendered; slate roof, hipped at left end, gabled at right end; 2 rear projecting lateral stacks (1 partly dismantled), right end stack with brick shaft. 2 single depth cottages, the rear elevation to the road, the front elevation facing a courtyard. Internal details suggest that the right hand cottage is the earlier. It may have been a C17 house but the early details visible at time of survey (1985) in both cottages are C18. The left hand cottage, 3 rooms wide, has a central entrance directly into a room heated from a rear lateral stack with smaller unheated rooms on either side, the right hand room was originally part of Throttle Kenniford. The cottage adjoining at the right end, Throttle Kenniford, has a main range of 1 heated room plus a 1 room plan extension at the right end (formerly an outbuilding). The main range was originally 2 rooms, the left hand heated from the rear lateral stack (partly dismantled) the right hand room heated from the end stack. There is said to be a blocked first floor window on the left end wall indicating that it was formerly an external wall. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2:2 window front. The left hand cottage has a C20 central porch with a sloping slate roof and 2-light small pane casements, some lights with iron glazing bars. Ground floor window right is a good example of a probably C18 complete iron casement, 2-lights, 20-panes per light with hasp handles. Throttle Kenniford, adjoining at the right, has 2 first floor gabled dormers and a C20 front door at the extreme left. Fenestration of 2- and 3-light C18 iron casements with small panes, with some replacement opening lights. Interior: The left hand cottage has 1 chamfered cross beam in the central room. Roofspace not inspected but said to have pegged timbers with straight principal rafters. Throttle Kenniford has a boxed in cross beam. The survival of the iron casements is an important feature of these cottages which form a group with the cottage at right angles to the road (qv).
