War Memorial Clock Tower

II

Clock tower. Probably c.1920. Rock-faced snecked gritstone with quoins,
slate spirelet. Square plan. Base of four low steps. Gothic style: on east
side a 2-centred arched doorway chamfered in two orders, with long-and-short
jamb-stones and voussoirs, above this a large inset rectangular panel
containing a metal plate lettered (in capitals) "To commemorate the
glorious memory of the men of Heapey and Wheelton who fell in the Great War
1914-1918"; 2nd stage has a trefoiled recess containing a small louvred
opening, and a projecting semi-circular sill (like a bowl), 3rd stage has a
clock face in chamfered circular surround enclosed by a square hoodmould
with foliated stops; top stage has a corbel table to a chamfered coping and
pierced square battlements surrounding a spirelet with swept slate cladding
and a weathervane. All other sides have clock faces, rear resembles front
but has no door, north side has no other feature, and south side has two
lettered panels, the upper displaying 46 names and the lower headed
1939-1945 listing 12 names.
