TQ 49 SE CHIGWELL VICARAGE LANE 5/23 The Mews and The Cottage GV II
Coach-house/stable block, early C19, approx. 40 metres N of Forest House, converted to 2 dwellings in C20. Stock bricks, Flemish bond, slate roofs. Square coach-house with upper floor, and 2 equal single-storey wings to NW and SE, the former comprising a cottage with one internal chimney stack, the SE comprising 2 stables. Extended to SE by one bay in C19, with lean-to roof. SW elevation, 5 round arches of gauged brick, now blocked, with C20 windows. String course of stucco at arch spring level on the wings only, with a rectangular recess above each arch. Dentilled band across middle arch, formerly the top of the coach entrance. First floor, 3 double-hung sash windows of 6 lights under segmental brick arches, early C19. Roof of central block pyramidal, wings hipped,'all of shallow pitch. NE elevation, facing road in central block, 2 double-hung sash windows of 6 lights with segmental arches of gauged brick and a similar blank aperture between on each floor, with a chimney behind the blanks. To each side, 2 arched recesses, the outer ones blank, the inner ones with windows as above. String course of stucco at arch spring level.
