SWIMBRIDGE SS 62 NW 11/177 Smalldon Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Possibly late C15, remodelled in C17 with C19 alterations. Painted cob and stone. Asbestos slate roof. Axial rubble stack. Brick stack at left end. L- shaped on plan. The front range, formerly open hall with through-passage, inserted stack backing onto through-passage and heated inner room. Both front and rear through-passage doorways have been blocked up, the entrance to front having been moved to left to enter hall. Lower end, formerly a shippon and stable with loft over, rebuilt as separate dwelling in C20. In C17 a 2-storeyed right-angled kitchen extension with gable end stack was added to rear left end. 2 storeys. 3- window range mainly C19 fenestration, one 4-light casement and two 2-light casements, all 8-panes per light. Tiled gabled porch roof with 6 panelled door. 2-light casements to each side, 8 panes per light and similar casement at left end, but with 3-panes per light. Interior: creamery in through-passage. Scratch-moulded joists and stop-chamfered ceiling beam to hall. Ovolo-moulded door surround to stair turret doorway to rear of hall and chamfered doorframe with elaborately carved stops to the durns at head of staircase. Inner room has built-in C19 cupboard to left of fireplace. Rear kitchen to extension was scroll-stopped chamfered fireplace lintel and ceiling beam with wide chamfer and large keel stops. Chamfered door surround partly cased in between hall and kitchen wing. Chamber over hall has had ceiling removed to expose large raised cruck truss with 2 tiers of threaded purlins and ridge purlins. Large mortices for removed collar. The majority of rafters survive, with heavy smoke- blackening extending from lower gabel end wall of through-passage to the hall/inner room cob partition which rises to the apex of the roof. Over the inner room a roughly pegged truss appears to be a late C18/C19 replacement with the purlins resting on the backs of the principals. Two C17 raised cruck trusses with slightly cranked lap-jointed collars and 2 tiers of threaded purlins and ridge purlin.
