Burlestone Farmhouse
5/240
II
Farmhouse. C17, extended circa C18 and altered in C19 and C20. Local slate
rubble, rendered left hand south west gable end. Bitumised slate roof with
gabled ends. Large rendered axial and gable end stacks with tapered caps
and slate-on-edge cowls.
Plan and Development: 3-room and cross passage plan, the lower left end
room and right hand inner room heated from gable end stacks; the hall has a
stack backing onto the cross-passage. There is a 2-storey porch at the
front of the cross-passage and at the back of the passage a stair turret.
The short 2-storey 1-room plan wing in front of the right hand inner room
was added later, probably in C18, and is said to have contained the dairy.
The external staircase at the right end gives access to a loft over the
inner room. It was probably in C19 that the axial passage at the back of
the hall was formed. In C20 the partition between the inner room and front
wing was removed and a single storey outshut built behind the hall.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window south east front with short
projecting 2-storey gabled wing to right and 2 storey porch to left of
centre, open-fronted on the ground floor with jambs corbelled out to carry
the timber lintel and first floor; its roof carried down from the main roof.
The ground floor windows are circa late C19 or early C20 3-light casements
with glazing bars, the first floor are similar but C20 replacements, all
with timber lintels, slate woodmoulds and rendered sills. On right side of
projecting right hand wing a flight of stone rubble steps up to first floor
doorway in gable end with plank door. At the rear stair turret to right of
centre with canted left side, C20 casements and late C20 flat roof rendered
single storey outshut at centre.
Interior: Much altered in late C19 and all original carpentry if it
survives is covered including fireplaces and ceiling beams. The roof was
entirely replaced in late Cl9 by well made hinge-post trusses.
