SWIMBRIDGE COBBATON SS 62 NW 11/191 Cobbaton Cross Old School Room
II
Former school, unoccupied April 1985. 1876. Roughly coursed stone rubble with ashlar dressings. Slate roof with gable ends. Tall lateral stack to north side with gablets to the base of the chequered stone polygonal shaft with crenellated lip to the tapered cap. Rectangular on plan with gabled porch with slate roof at east gable end. Single storey. North facade has straight-headed transomed windows to each side of stack. South side is blind. Each gable end has segmental arched louvred openings above a 2-light transomed window with segmental arches to the lights. East end also has projecting porch of stone and timber with slate roof. Windows of 7 lights on north side, 3 lights with stone surround, the 4 outer lights have timber surrounds. 6-light window to gable end with carved gable braces. Entrance on south side has plank door to chamfered door surround, with short buttress to left side. Above the porch is a bellcote supported on moulded console brackets to the gable end of the main range with pointed arched bell opening. Interior: dado matchboarding. 2 plain A-frame roof trusses with raking struts.
