Details
SX 98 SE LYMPSTONE STRAND (north side), Lympstone
5/54 Bridgethorpe and front wall 11.ll.52 to garden (formerly listed under Station Road) GV II
Detached house. Early C18; front bays added and other alterations, circa 1840. Brick in Flemish bond, blocked stuccoed to front; hipped slate roof. Single-depth plan house, with principal room to either side of central entrance hall containing stairs, with a rear service wing, forming overall an L-shaped plan; later C19 extensions behind main range. External end stacks with set-offs; internal end stack to wing. 2 storeys. Front: almost symmetrical 3-window range; rusticated quoins; moulded gutter box; 3 full flat-roofed dormers; 2 storeyed canted bays flank central porch, 8:12:8 pane hornless sashes to each floor; 12-pane hornless sash window above porch which has moulded cornice, Ionic square-section columns, and low panelled plinth side walls; half-glazed panelled door. 2 early C18 windows survive on the first floor of left- hand side elevation, each of 2 lights, mullions and transoms pegged; two 2-light C19 casement windows under segmental arches; ground floor with 16-pane hornless sash window under similar arch. C19 doorway with Gothick arched panelling, under simple canopy on shaped brackets. Interior: early C19 joinery; open well stair with stick balusters and ramped handrail. A-profile roof trusses. This listing includes the brick front garden wall on stone plinth, which has evidence of a central entrance, now blocked.
