5/69 The Sanctuary and Sunnybank 18.11.77 - II
2 dwellings, formerly a single farmhouse (Underhill farmhouse). Late C16 with later alterations. Roughcast cob on stone footings; gabled-end thatched roof, the rear wing half-hipped. Originally a 3-room, through-passage plan house, the service-end to the right of the passage, with a rear parlour wing. A brick extension was added to the higher end in the late C19. Service end heated by an external end stack; hall heated by an external front lateral stack, with 2 set offs to each side, and a big front slated set off; the inner room was originally unheated and the end stack is probably level with the brick extension. Brick shafts. 2 storeys. Front: 4-window range; 2-light casement windows to first floor, under shallow eyebrow eaves; 2-light casement window to each of the 3 ground floor rooms. C19 and C20 casement windows to brick extension. Interior: parlour wing with 3 chamfered axial ceiling beams with cyma reverse mouldings and run-out stops. Screens might survive beneath present internal partitions. Upper crucks to wing and main range (roof space not examined).
