SX 8178 BOVEY TRACEY TOWN HALL PLACE (south side) Bovey Tracey 11/92 Nos. 3 and 4 - GV II
3 cottages, believed to have been a single farmhouse originally. C16 or C17 with later additions. Rendered solid walls, probably of stone or cob. Asbestos-slated roofs. 3 ashlar granite chimneystacks with set-offs and tapered tops; one on ridge of street range, off-centre to right, this stack having a thatch weathering, the second projecting at rear of street range, off-centre to left and the third in east wall of rear wing. L-shaped plan, the front range possibly of 3-room and cross- passage type originally. 2 storeys. 6-window front. In centre of ground storey 2 doors. Left-hand door has 6 flush panels and cast-iron lion-head knocker; fanlight with shaped ends. Right-hand door C20 with C19 cast iron knocker. At either side of this pair of doorways a 2-light C19 wood casement window, each light of 2 panes. At far right-hand end a flat-headed cart entrance with inserted C20 brick jambs. At far left-hand end a C20 single-storey shop built out in front. Second-storey windows all C19 2-light wood casements, each light of 2 panes. Second and third windows from left have raised plaster quoins. The far right-hand section, above the cart entrance, is probably a C19 addition. Interior not inspected, but almost certainly contains features of interest, some possibly concealed under plaster. The house is unusual in having an early barn (q.v.) at the back, making a rare urban group.
