LITTLE CLACTON THE STREET TM 11 NE (west side) 7/120 Church of St. James 17.11.66 II* Parish church. C12 Chancel. C14 Nave of earlier origin. C14 south porch. C15 bell turret. C19 restorations. Flint and rubble mainly plastered. Red plain tiled roof. Weatherboarded bell turret with timber sounding louvres and pointed roof. Some stone dressings. Chancel buttressed at eastern angles. Stone parapet verge. Restored C14 eastern window of 3 pointed lights in a 2 centred head with moulded label. 2 windows to south wall, the eastern of 2 lights similar to east window, western C15 of 2 cinquefoil lights under a square head with label. Between the window is a doorway with chamfered brick jambs and rough stone 2 centred arch, label over. North wall with 2 buttresses between which is a small C12 round headed window. Nave, south wall, 2 eastern windows similar to south eastern Chancel window, early headstops to label of eastern window. One western single pointed light. East of this window is the C14 doorway with chamfered jambs and 2 centred arch. C14 timber south porch with red brick plinth, chambered tie beams, open side bays, 2 huge arched beams forming a 2 centred archway, one bay either side with trefoiled heads. Crown post roof, bracing to gable. Foiled bargeboards. North wall of Nave eastern C16 3 light window, chamfered and moulded red brick, segmental pointed- head, C14 western window, moulded red brick, of 2 lights under a 2 centred arch with label. Between the windows the north doorway with stone chamfered 2 centred arch. West wall, buttressed at angles, restored 2 light window, 2 centred arch, label over. Below is a small C20 rectangular window with centre mullion set in the blocked doorway. Interior. Chancel, plastered 3 cant roof. C20 stained glass to east window. Brick floor throughout. Dropped cill to south window. 3 niches to north wall, 2 with square heads one round headed. South wall piscina, double moulded 2 centre arched heads, imposts, chamfered jambs, 2 later round drains. C19/C20 carved wood altar rails. No chancel arch. Nave 7 cant roof with ridgeboard. C19 stained glass to 2 south windows. Brass on north wall to William Hubbard of Bovill Hall and his 3 wyves, Rose, Jayne and Joice, 24 June 1596. Royal Hatchment 1726 over south door. C12 square font of Purbeck marble, each face with 4 round headed arches, under each arch on north side a raised cross. Stem restored 1954. C20 gallery at west end. Bell turret of 4 chamfered corner posts, arched braces to heavy tie beams, saltire side bracing, detailed illustration C.A. Hewett Church Carpentry 1974. RCHM I.
